Berlin
Since I was in Prague, the natural route to the north on my trip around the world was to pass through Berlin.
Germany – a brief history
Berlin, the capital of Germany, is an east-west commercial and geographical hub.
As a result, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia and, from 1871 onwards, of Germany.
With the Second World War, it was completely destroyed and divided, separating the communist world from the capitalist world.
In 1961, a concrete barrier, the Berlin Wall, was built.
With all the wars, bombs, fighting, etc., it was completely destroyed.
Even the Berlin Wall no longer exists, just a few meters.
Berlin, the rebuilt city.
Berlin is located 180 km south of the Baltic Sea, 190 km north of the border between Germany and the Czech Republic, and 89 km west of Poland.
It is located in the glacial valley of the River Spree, which runs through the city center.
The city has a lot of history, art and has become very popular with students and artists, writers who have become new immigrants.
It is a city full of events and things to do. Although most of the places and buildings are “new” they hide a lot of history.
However, we only know what happened if we can admire it. When you arrive in the city, everything is very modern and you don’t see anything that reminds you of what happened. An example of this is Checkpoint Charlie, which is the famous access gate between East and West Germany.
But today it is just an ordinary street, with no trace of what it once was.
