Barra Grande, Piauí: The perfect refuge between the sea and tranquility.
After a few days in Parnaíba, I continued my journey towards Barra Grande, on the coast of Piauí. The journey is short, just over 70 km, but the change in atmosphere is instantaneous. If Parnaíba is the urban heart of the region, Barra Grande is that tranquil refuge that makes you slow down.
Arriving there is like entering a different rhythm. The sandy streets, the palm trees swaying in the wind, and the sound of the waves create a setting that seems tailor-made for relaxation.
First impression of Barra Grande
As soon as I arrived, I felt the simple and charming vibe of the village. Everything is barefoot-friendly, time seems to slow down, and the smiles of the locals make you feel at home. The infrastructure is good, but without losing its rustic charm. It’s the kind of destination that combines comfort with authenticity. The small town center with its charming bars and guesthouses is very reminiscent of the town of Búzios, in Rio de Janeiro, many years ago.
The village and its charm
Barra Grande has a small but lively town center. At night, the restaurants and bars light up and live music sets the relaxed mood.
I had dinner at a restaurant facing the sea, with my feet in the sand, savoring grilled fish with sweet potato puree. Simple and perfect.
The gastronomy is a strong point: dishes with shrimp, lobster, and fresh fish appear on practically every menu. And the homemade touch makes all the difference.
Accommodation and travel style
The guesthouses in Barra Grande follow the same spirit of the village: charming, sustainable, and integrated with nature. I stayed in a guesthouse with hammocks on the veranda and a view of the sunset.
It’s a destination that suits both those who want to relax and those who seek adventure.
What to do in Barra Grande
The main activity here is simply enjoying the atmosphere. But there’s plenty to explore:
- Barra Grande Beach – The main attraction. With its shallow and calm waters, it’s perfect for long walks, swimming, and lazy afternoons watching the colorful kitesurfers on the horizon.
- Kitesurfing – In fact, Barra Grande is one of the best places in Brazil to practice the sport. The constant wind and calm sea create ideal conditions. Even if you’ve never been on a board before, it’s worth taking a lesson to feel the energy of the place.
- Horseback riding or buggy ride – At sunset, rides through the dunes and nearby lagoons are unmissable. The golden light makes everything even more beautiful.
- Tour to the Parnaíba Delta – Many visitors use Barra Grande as a base to take a boat trip to the delta. It’s a good alternative for those who want to explore at a leisurely pace.
- Seahorse Watching Tour – This was my choice, as it’s one of the most enchanting experiences in the region. The trip begins with a horse-drawn carriage that takes us to the Camurupim River. We board a small canoe and the tour unfolds amidst the mangroves, with local guides who explain about the ecosystem and the life of the seahorses. In addition to encountering the seahorses, the tour offers stunning landscapes, the singing of birds, and the silence of nature. Lasting approximately one hour, it’s a peaceful, educational activity and perfect for those seeking contact with nature. More than just a simple tour, it’s a true lesson in environmental preservation and a way to experience the natural beauty of Barra Grande in a responsible manner.
Best time to visit Barra Grande
The weather here is warm all year round, but the best time is from July to December, when the wind blows constantly and the weather is stable, ideal for kitesurfing and tours. Between January and May, the village is greener and quieter, great for those who prefer less crowds.

Barra Grande on the Route of Emotions
Barra Grande is one of the most charming stops on the Route of Emotions. After exploring the Delta in Parnaíba, it was the perfect place to rest, swim, and enjoy the sunset without rushing.
It was here that I understood the true meaning of “traveling more and better”: being present, feeling the wind, savoring the moment.
I left Barra Grande with a light heart and a strong desire to return. Piauí showed me that, even with a small stretch of coastline, it has landscapes and experiences that remain huge in my memory.
