Podgorica - Montenegro

Podgorica, Montenegro: a city of contrasts and surprises

First impressions: what to expect from the Montenegrin capital

Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, is a city full of contrasts and pleasant surprises. Despite being one of the least known capitals in Europe, it has a discreet, modern charm and hints of history hidden around every corner.

Although simple at first glance, Podgorica reveals, to those who know how to look, deep layers of history and culture that few destinations offer so genuinely.

The city is not the country’s main tourist destination. However, it offers an authentic insight into Montenegrin urban life. It serves as an excellent gateway to explore other regions.

What to see and do in Podgorica?

Millennium Bridge: a symbol of the new Podgorica

One of the city’s most recognizable landmarks is undoubtedly the Millennium Bridge. This modern and elegant structure crosses the Morača River, connecting the two parts of the city. Its bold design has become the symbol of contemporary Podgorica.

Old Town: Where the Past Lives on

Although the modern part of the city is well-developed, the old part preserves traces of its Ottoman history.

Wandering through the narrow streets, you will come across the Clock Tower (Sahat Kula) and some old mosques. It is an interesting contrast, revealing different layers of local history.

Parks and nature: places to relax

In addition to the Morača and Ribnica rivers that frame the city, there are several parks that are worth a visit. The highlight is Gorica Park, perfect for peaceful walks or bike rides, always with beautiful views of the surrounding city.

In addition, as the city is practically flat, walking or cycling around Podgorica is a pleasant and inviting experience.

Republic Square: the vibrant heart of the city

Another spot that cannot be missed is Republic Square. Surrounded by outdoor cafés, it is the beating heart of Podgorica, a great place to take a break, watch the world go by and feel the spirit of the city.

Ribnica River and Adzi-Pasa Bridge: a touch of tradition

Walking along the banks of the Ribnica River, you will come across ancient ruins and the charming Adzi-Pasa Bridge, one of the historical relics that show the most traditional and authentic side of the city.

Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ: grandeur and faith

If you want to see something truly grand, don’t miss the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. With its impressive size and stunning golden mosaics, it is one of the most important religious buildings in Montenegro.

Sahat Kula: the Clock Tower and its fascinating history

Sahat Kula, built in 1667, is a 19-meter-high stone clock tower. It was built by the Ottomans and, at the end of the 19th century, a metal cross was placed on top, symbolizing the transition from Ottoman rule to Christian Montenegrin control.

The stonework style of the tower is very reminiscent of that seen in the historical buildings of Kotor. Today, Sahat Kula is considered an important cultural monument and a must-see for anyone visiting Podgorica.

Duklija Ruins: A Walk Through Ancient History

If you like ancient history and want to do something different, a visit to the Duklija Ruins is a great option. These ruins are located at the entrance to the city and, although they are not as spectacular as others in Europe, they offer a delightful experience for a peaceful morning.

The walk to Duklija takes about an hour from the new city. Just follow the course of the Morača River northwards, until it joins the Zeta River. A short distance later, you will reach the archaeological site.

The ruins are well signposted and have explanations about the remains of what once stood there: thermal baths, a forum, a basilica and even a temple.

In addition to learning more about the history of the region, the walk provides beautiful views of the river and the natural surroundings.

Time to say goodbye: on to new adventures

After exploring Podgorica and soaking up the history of Montenegro, it’s now time to head back to Tirana and then catch a flight to the Netherlands.
