Jericoacoara - Travel Guide
Jericoacoara: The most charming village in Brazil.
Jericoacoara lives in the imagination of many as an isolated paradise. When we hear that name, we immediately think of colorful hammocks over the water and time seeming to stand still. We imagine sandy streets, starlight replacing streetlights, and that feeling of a fishing village that still endures.
Many seek the sunset on the dune or the constant wind for sailing. But, for me, Jeri was more than just a postcard image. I went in search of disconnection and freedom. I traded the asphalt for sand between my toes and the fixed itinerary for the surprise of every corner.
On this trip, I sought what remains of the raw and real in this corner of Ceará. I left preconceptions aside and immersed myself in simplicity. Luxury here is not what you buy, but the connection you make with the place and with the people.
Following this complete guide to Jericoacoara, you will see how to experience Jeri in a spontaneous and immersive way.
Is Jericoacoara village worth visiting?
Yes, it’s definitely worth it! Jericoacoara is a hidden sanctuary on the coast of Ceará. Furthermore, the village maintains a rustic charm that enchants travelers from all over the world.
The villa is about 300 kilometers from Fortaleza, but the distance is worth every second of the journey.
The atmosphere of this destination is vibrant yet relaxing. The sandy streets and the absence of streetlights preserve the brilliance of the stars. So, be prepared to walk barefoot and feel a real connection with nature.
What makes Jericoacoara unique is the perfect blend of gigantic dunes, crystal-clear lagoons, and a calm sea.
While the wind blows steadily, you realize that time passes at a different pace there. Visiting this place brings a sense of freedom that is hard to find in other parts of Brazil.
Culture
The village of Jericoacoara began as a small, isolated fishing village. However, tourism has transformed it into a global meeting point without erasing its roots. Local residents preserve the stories of the sea and the typical hospitality of northeastern Brazil.
The cuisine reflects this heritage with dishes based on fresh seafood. You should try the famous shrimp rice and the grilled fish.
Furthermore, artistic life is also present. Crafts, live music, and small galleries scattered throughout the village create a creative and authentic atmosphere.

Main tourist attractions
Sunset Dune (Duna do por do Sol)
Located next to the village, this giant dune attracts hundreds of people every late afternoon. The ritual consists of climbing the sand dune and waiting for the sun to dip into the sea. It is one of the few places in Brazil where the sun sets on the ocean horizon.
The atmosphere at the top of the dune is one of pure celebration and gratitude. As soon as the sun disappears, it’s common to hear collective applause. You’ll feel a contagious energy and a profound peace as you watch the colors of the sky change from orange to purple.
Pierced Stone (Pedra furada)
Pedra Furada is Jericoacoara’s most famous postcard image. It’s a rock formation sculpted by wave erosion over centuries. A walk along the beach to reach it during low tide reveals smaller caves and incredible natural pools.
Upon arriving at the rock, you will feel the grandeur of nature. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks creates a relaxing soundtrack. Therefore, arrive early to avoid the photo queues and take the opportunity to meditate before the ocean.
Paradise Lagoon
This lagoon is famous for its colorful hammocks within the crystal-clear water. The blue of the water varies with depth, creating a stunning gradient. Furthermore, the beach clubs surrounding it offer complete comfort for those who want to spend the day relaxing.
The feeling of lying in a hammock with the water gently lapping against your body is invigorating. Meanwhile, you can enjoy tropical drinks and local snacks. It’s the perfect place to forget the routine and immerse yourself in the tranquility of Ceará.
Jericoacoara Village
Walking through the village is an attraction in itself. The sandy streets, little shops, and cafes create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
At night, the village comes alive with music, restaurants, and lively bars. Therefore, it’s the perfect time to explore without a fixed itinerary.
How to get to Jericoacoara
Reaching paradise requires planning, but the options have improved significantly in recent years.
- Plane: Jericoacoara Regional Airport (Jijoca) is the fastest option. It receives direct flights from major capital cities. Another alternative is to fly to Fortaleza and continue by land.
- Bus: There are regular bus lines departing from Fortaleza. The trip takes about seven hours. So, be prepared for a long journey, but with beautiful scenery.
- Car: If you are driving your own car or a rental car, you will need to leave it in a parking lot in Jijoca. Only authorized vehicles are allowed in the village of Jericoacoara. The final stretch between Jijoca and the village must be done in a 4×4 vehicle.
My last visit was at the end of August, with very good weather, fewer tourists, and good prices.

Keep in mind these 15 foolproof tips for traveling safely in any country.
As well as reinforcing the actions you should take when traveling to Brazil in “Brazil with Safety: Travel More and Better”.
- Money: Most establishments accept cards and PIX (Brazil’s instant payment system), but the internet signal can be unreliable. The village has no bank branches, only some self-service terminals that don’t always work. Therefore, bring a small amount of cash.
- Locomotion: Within the village, travel is primarily done on foot. Avoid walking alone on isolated trails at night. If you are hiking to Pedra Furada, wear appropriate footwear to avoid cuts from the rocks.
- Behavior: Respect the environmental rules of the National Park. Do not remove shells or stones from nature and always take your trash back with you. The preservation of the site depends on the attitude of each visitor.
- General care: The sun in Ceará is very strong. Use sunscreen constantly and stay hydrated. Also, be careful in rocky areas of the sea, as the currents can be treacherous in certain spots.
